Month: April 2013

Ten on Tuesday: 4/30/13

1. I ordered Season Five of Fringe and can’t wait for it to arrive (as early as May 13th according to Amazon). At the same time I’m kind of sad that my favorite series is ending–it’s been soooooo good.

2. Song of the week: ‘Flannigan’s Ball’ by the Dropkick Murphys. It’s a fun Irish punk rock song to get me energized in the morning.

3. I hope it’s a little less windy today so I can go out and run my errands. Yesterday I felt like I might blow away if I went outside.

4. This is hilarious because I used to work on a maintenance crew and as terrible as it sounds, I always wished for some of the nastier employees to hit a freshly mopped patch of floor and do the splits. You may scold me in the comments.

5. I think I finally found the place where I want to get my tattoo work done. Now I just need to track down some good pictures that I can print out and take in to explain what I want, as I’m a terrible artist myself and would never be able to draw the images to explain them. So far I think I’ve got a fairly serviceable dragon and phoenix, but I need a tiger to match the dragon. Google Images is not doing a good enough job reading my mind on this matter.

6. I’m going to go ahead and wade into hot water by saying: why do people feel the need to declaw cats? This bugs the hell out of me. It’s cruel, cripples your cat, and can cause behavioral problems you didn’t anticipate; so much so that in England it’s deemed “unnecessary mutilation” (it’s illegal in many other European countries as well). You can read up on it here. Please, for the love of all on this earth, if you have a problem with your cat scratching the furniture–DON’T GET A DAMN CAT! Getting one and then ripping the claws out, which is akin to chopping off your fingers at the knuckle, is a stupid solution.

7. I get into these modes where I eat one food obsessively, and lately my nosh of choice is cinnamon rolls. I’ve been holding out all week but now that the weekend is here I finally picked some up to make a nice “brinner” for the hubby and I.

8. Right after I got back from the dermatologist for my annual skin check, one of my friends had to go in and have a cancerous mole taken off of her face. PEOPLE! WEAR. SUNSCREEN. PLEASE. A few months of a tan is not worth the possibility of melanoma, which is the leading cause of death for young women aged 25 to 30, if you didn’t know.

9. I laughed too hard at this. Cats always act like they’re on something.

10. I’m majorly unhappy with the new way to embed Pins from Pinterest, so I’m trying out different methods of sharing the images. Those little tiny crappy embeds just don’t cut it for me!

Belated Totally Doable I Have A Life April Nail Art Challenge: Day 25: Gold/silver

For some reason I thought we didn’t have to do the gold/silver nails until today. Oops! Better late than never, I suppose.
I wanted to show off the gold shimmer in this peachy polish with a gold design on top, but I’m not sure it turned out quite the way it looked in my mind. I think there wasn’t enough contrast between the two polishes to really make the design stand out. Anyway, it was fun to try something different!

30 Day Shop My Closet Challenge: Day 24

It was nearly 70 degrees here today! Perfect for letting the cats outside to sun themselves all day, and for breaking out my favorite spring/summer dress ever. This one is so comfy and I love the turquoise color.

This was actually sold in the swimwear section at Walmart for $15 as a beach coverup, but with a belt, studded sandals and nice earrings, it looks good enough to wear for a date. I added a thin sweater because it’s not quite warm enough to be running around in a strapless dress quite yet!

1. This link-up is a day late because I’ve had one of those migraines that just won’t quit for the past two days. This also explains the lack of an OOTD post yesterday. But that’s okay! If you picture me in sweats and a Dark Side of the Moon t-shirt you’ll know exactly what you missed!

2. Who else noticed the adorable penguins on YouTube for Earth Day? I had to share them since they’re one of my favorite animals.

3. Here’s this week’s song: ‘This Isn’t Our Parade’ from Santigold.

4. I should probably start fixing my hair and a makeup a little better before I go to work so my coworkers aren’t so shocked on the rare occasions I do fix up. Hey, I just don’t feel like pulling out the eyeliner and the flatiron every night. So sue me.
5. So in the two days that I neglected to open up Bloglovin’, you guys amassed over 300 posts for me to read. Holy. Crap. Y’all have been busy!

6.  Speaking of Bloglovin’…how come I can type it into the address bar and it automatically logs me in, but if I’m checking out a new blog and click on their Bloglovin’ link it asks me to sign up or sign in again? And yet when I type it into the search bar again, I’m signed in? Hello, Bloglovin’? Is there anybody in there?

7. I tested myself mightily this week by dashing into the mall to pick up a gift card for a friend’s birthday. There’s cute stuff EVERYWHERE! Gaaaaaaaahhhhh. Eight weeks left in my spending ban. I can do this.

8. One thing that’s not tempting me right now: nail polish. I started unpacking my collection to film (will be up later this week I hope) and…uh…I have a lot! Definitely don’t need any new ones for a while.

9. How is April almost over already? I thought 2013 just started?

10. So I was really bummed to hear that our local movie theater will be closing on the 28th…this was the last of the local theaters in our town and now we’ll just have the Regal Cinema in the shopping complex. I have nothing against big chains per se but I liked our local theaters, not to mention they were much cheaper than the big chain cinema. I think today we’ll try to go see a few movies at the local theater as one last hurrah before they close.

30 Day Shop My Closet Challenge: Day 22

I’ve been feeling a little bit boho gypsy lately. It’s all those Free People catalogs that show up in the mail, I swear. A little fringe and some beaded earrings are perfect for spring.

One of the best parts about rocking a boho look is that you can just knot a scarf over your hair to hide dirty roots and frizz. It’s a super-cute excuse to totally not care what your hair is doing that day.

30 Day Shop My Closet Challenge: Day 21

Day 21! Wheee, we’re almost done with this challenge! I like to make a basic black pencil skirt a little less office-ish and more fun with rock n’ roll accessories like ankle booties, a studded clutch, and my tiger sweater.

30 Day Shop My Closet Challenge: Day 20 (plus mini review of ‘The Place Beyond The Pines’)

After spending the last couple of days sleeping on the couch in my sweats because I was just feeling blah, one of my friends dragged me out of the house to go see a movie. I wanted something that would be cute but also comfy and warm–movie theaters are way too cold, in my opinion!–so I went for jeggings, layered tops, wedge sneakers, and my favorite faux leather moto jacket.

I kind of went for a gypsy-rocker style today with big silver jewelry pieces and my slouchy knit hat. At least I still had a pop of color on my nails!

K. and I went to see The Place Beyond The Pines, with Bradley Cooper and Ryan Gosling. It’s directed by Derek Cianfrance, who also directed Gosling in Blue Valentine. I never used to pay much attention to Gosling, but after seeing him in Drive I’ve started to take note of any movie he’s in; the guy is a serious actor and he plays in some really dark, edgy and artsy films. Needless to say, his current roles are a far cry from The Notebook (no diss intended!).

The Place Beyond The Pines clocks in at two hours and twenty minutes, but it doesn’t feel that long. A sort of three-part epic tragedy, it opens in the late nineties with the carnival motorcycle stuntman Luke (Gosling), who abruptly leaves his rough-and-tumble life with the traveling show to settle down in Schenectady, New York, after learning he fathered a son with a former fling, Romina (Eva Mendes). His attempts to insert himself into his son’s life don’t go over well with Romina or her family and Luke’s downward spiral puts him on a crash course with an ambitious rookie cop named Avery (Cooper) whose big dreams are hampered by rampant corruption in his department.

It sounds like such a simple plot on paper, but as the movie unfolds through various plot twists, it turns into something so much bigger. The butterfly effect of destruction that ripples out further and further through the film is hard to describe without giving away the whole plot, so I’ll just say that the film does cover a span of nearly twenty years as it looks at the consequences of both Luke’s and Avery’s choices as young men. If you like crime dramas or more artsy films instead of mainstream picks, you have to see this one. I didn’t expect to like it so much but I would definitely see it again.
