Random Thursday: TV/movie character I’d love to date

Is it weird that I don’t have a huge list? I think this is because I generally favor the bad guys in movies–they’re often much more interesting, in my opinion–and obviously they just wouldn’t make very good boyfriends. The other problem is that I can’t just like a character because they’re “hot”. They also have to be brave, smart, funny, etc., and that’s asking a lot. However, there are a few movie characters I could see being acceptable dates:

Aragorn from The Lord of the Rings. Does it even get much better? He’s a king in exile who’s just as adept fighting goblins as he is singing Elvish love poetry. Sigh. I blame J.R.R. Tolkien for ruining my expectations of men forever, for all time.

Possible date night complications: restaurant overrun by orcs; possibility of hobbits tagging along; bails out on date night because “the beacons of Gondor are lit”.

Daryl Dixon (The Walking Dead) or Murphy McManus (The Boondock Saints)…either way, Norman Reedus seems to have no problem fighting off the bad guys. Also, he loves cats. He would have to take a shower before our date, though.

Shaun from Shaun of the Dead. Actually, it’s less about Shaun and more about Simon, who (I think) is hilarious. But Shaun’s not bad either. He does a great job of stepping up to protect his friends from the zombie apocalypse, which surely counts for something.

Peter Bishop from Fringe. Brave, brainy and never batting an eye at the bizarre, he was also perfectly fine sharing butt-kicking duties with his girlfriend rather than insisting on always being in charge. This one comes with a wacky parent attached, but then so do about 50% of the potential mates out there, so that’s a small pitfall.

Jason Bourne (the Bourne movies). Basically an unstoppable badass; will go to any and all lengths to protect and avenge the woman he loves. Downside: you think your boyfriend has trouble remembering your anniversary…

Thor (The Avengers). One of the very few times it’s acceptable for a dude to have long hair. Hope he buys his own shampoo, though.

Which TV or movie characters would you go on a date with? Tell me in the comments!

Ten on Tuesday…on a Wednesday!

I know I’m a day late to the link-up, but it’s too fun to skip! I don’t really have a reason for not posting yesterday, except that we were having one of those weird lazy days when absolutely nothing gets accomplished. And that includes blogging. #bloggerfail

Anyway, make sure to stop by Alyssa’s blog every Tuesday for this awesome link-up. Just grab the button, jot down ten random things that are on your mind, and add your linky to the widget! Hey presto!

1. In news of the totally lame, we are just now having our Valentine’s dinner today. On the 26th. Better late than never?

2. Un-lame: this showed up for V-Day. After he gave it to me, the husband asked, “So what did I just buy?” Eyeshadow, honey. The best eyeshadow ever.

3. Also un-lame: I’ll finally be trying vegan shrimp today. Fingers crossed that it’s good.

4. One good thing about the cold weather: the cats are extra cuddly.

5. I really want to see this movie when it comes out. I don’t like Tom Cruise, but I do love Emily Blunt, and it’s awesome that she’s a soldier hero instead of just a love interest.

6. ModCloth has so many awesome cat sweaters and other assorted kitty items, I can’t decide which one I like best. Just type in the search term “cats” and you’ll what I mean.

7. I finally got a new webcam, so we’ll see how that works for filming YouTube videos. I’d really like to film more, and it’s just so inconvenient on my tablet. (Not really the tablet’s fault, it’s just not meant for that sort of thing!)

8. The webcam came home after I discovered that my old camcorder is sooooo old, it can’t even be used with our computer. As in, we’re running Windows 7, and the last time they released a driver update, it was to accommodate Windows XP…way back in 2007. Yikes.

9. Check out this awesome video of a dancing armadillo that my friend Katrin sent over this AM. Instant good day.

10. Less than a week until we get to drool over Oscar dresses!

Random Thursday: Movies I hate to admit I loved

You know this is going to be a good one! There are a few movies that I suppose I should be embarrassed to admit I enjoy.

Around the World in 80 Days (2004)

I know this is kind of a lame Disney kiddie flick, but I love Steve Coogan. And it makes me laugh, so that’s worth something, right?

The Lara Croft movies

These aren’t exactly highbrow entertainment, so it’s a little embarrassing to admit how many times I’ve watched them. But how can you not love Lara? She’s gutsy, fearless and always armed with a quick comeback. Girl power, y’all.

G.I. Joe: Retaliation

Go on, laugh. I like really over the top action scenes and this movie delivered. The mountain peak ninja sword fight? Totally never happening in real life, but very cool in a movie.

The Time Traveler’s Wife and The Vow

These are probably the two sappiest movies I’ve ever willingly watched. My goodness. In both movies the characters are deeply in love but are torn apart by horrible tragedies, and the amazing amount of love they still have for each other (and how hard they fight to save their relationships) is amazing. Just, uh, just don’t tell anyone I cried at the end.

So what movies are you embarrassed to admit loving? Fair is fair, I told you mine so ‘fess up in the comments!

Journey to Vegan

Today I’m over on Celeste’s blog chatting with her and my friend Katrin from Land of Candy Canes about our vegan journeys! Lots of people are full of questions about the “why” and “how” of making the leap from a regular diet to a vegetarian/vegan one, so if you’re interested in our stories, I’d love it if you checked out Celeste’s post (here). She did a great job putting together the questions for this post!

Vegan red velvet white chip cookies (February Recipe Writers)

I admit I’m a day late with this delicious Valentine’s recipe, but when I got home from work yesterday and got out my mixing bowl I realized I didn’t have an essential ingredient: cream cheese (vegan, natch). And there was no way I was going back out to the store for one item.  So apologies for the delay, and I hope the deliciousness makes up for it!
I first got to thinking about red velvet when it started popping up all over my Pinterest board for Valentine’s Day. Chiefly in mind was this recipe from the blog New Mama Diaries–it looked so simple to prepare (always a good thing). But of course, I had to veganize it before I could try it…so here are my results. I bet if you serve these to family and friends, they’ll never guess that they lack eggs and real cream cheese!
What you’ll need:
One package of red velvet cake mix
1/2 cup coconut oil
One 8-oz. package cream cheese
Two cups (or one package) white chocolate chips
Preheat your oven to 375 F. Use a hand mixer to cream together the coconut oil and cream cheese. Add in the red velvet cake mix and beat until ingredients are thoroughly blended; stir in the chocolate chips. Drop onto cookie sheets in rounded spoonfuls; bake at 375 for ten to twelve minutes. Allow to cool before serving (the cookies will be too gooey to pick up when they’re fresh out of the oven!).
A note on ingredients: Many vegans find the Duncan Hines cake mixes to be acceptable, but if you’re looking for a brand that says “vegan” on the box, check the baking aisle of your local health food store (mine has tons of such items that I have not found through online sellers). Alternatively, you could whip up a from-scratch recipe–it will take a little longer than using a box mix, but it will still taste good. Just remember that a wet cake batter won’t need added coconut oil, and you’ll need to adjust the wet-to-dry ratio so the batter won’t be super-runny.
Vegan cream cheese is pretty easy to find at health food stores and even some regular grocery stores. Vegan white chocolate chips can be harder to find, but if you don’t have any on hand, regular chips will work fine too–the taste will be slightly different, but the cookies will still be delicious!
