Ten on Tuesday: official spring, cookies, and pet bats

1. I can’t even tell you how thrilled I am that spring officially starts in two days.

2. I discovered that I’m really only a cookie person until I’m too lazy to form dough into individual cookies, and then I’m totally fine with cake. Apparently any sweet of a bakery variety will do.

3. Every time I look at this photo (source as yet unknown to me), I think of Bryson and Katz from A Walk in the Woods. If you’ve never read anything by Bill Bryson you must start now, because he’s hilarious as well as intelligent.

4. Why does this make me laugh so hard?

5. My husband really knows my weak spots: he keeps saying he wants to get one of the new Xbox One consoles, but I don’t want to dish out the cash for it. Last week he promised that if he gets one, I can get another cat. That sort of temptation should be illegal!

6. Speaking of which, I must find this vending machine immediately.

7. I just love bats! Sooo cute–like little cats with wings. (More pics here.)

8. If this place really exists, then I want to go there.

9. I’d love to get a tattoo like this with my husband or best friend. Even though I’ve heard that tattoos on the feet hurt like crazy.

10. Basically me on the weekend.

Recipe Writers: St. Patrick’s Punch (non-alcoholic)

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! For this month’s recipe I wanted something super-simple that could be whipped up for a party with minimal ingredients and minimal time. Since not all of us celebrate St. Patrick’s with green beer, and some of you might be hosting a party with youngsters, this punch is also non-alcoholic (though still very green!).

You’ll need:

  • One 12-oz. can limeade concentrate
  • One two-liter bottle of lemon-lime soda (Sprite, Sierra Mist, or just the store brand!)
  • Green food coloring

Thaw the limeade. Mix the limeade concentrate and the lemon-lime soda in a large pitcher. Add 3-4 drops of green food coloring and serve chilled!

Cheers!

Thought Questions, day #9: What’s a belief that you hold with which many people disagree?

While reading Danielle’s blog Underland to Wonderland, I came across a post in which she talked about the website Thought Questions and their 365 thought-provoking questions to ask yourself over the course of a year. I decided that I would start answering one of the questions each day for the next year. Not only will this give me a reason to blog every day for a year straight, it will get my creative juices flowing–and I think it will be fun! If you join in please leave me a comment so I can see your answers too. :)

Day #9: What’s a belief that you hold with which many people disagree?

I believe that it’s wrong to use animals for food, clothing or entertainment. I won’t eat meat or other animal products, wear fur or leather, or use products/entertainment services that involve the mistreatment of animals, which can range from animal-tested makeup to circuses. A lot of people disagree, but I think it’s morally wrong to mistreat another living thing for your own amusement, and that includes animals, even if it’s “just” a fish or “just” another animal that isn’t cute and cuddly. If I wouldn’t do it to my pet kitties, I won’t do it, period!

Thought Questions, day #8: Who do you love and what are you doing about it?

Day #8: Who do you love and what are you doing about it?

Well, obviously I love my husband very much. As for what I’m doing about it, I think when you love someone you’re willing to invest work into the relationship, even when it’s not easy, and goodness knows marriage is never easy. But I love him enough to work through our bad spots and find little ways for us to connect, since we’re apart so much with our crazy work/school schedules. Even if it’s just eating burritos and watching TV for an hour, he appreciates it when I step away from whatever I’m doing and carve out that time for us.
