Giveaway: Bill Bryson’s ‘A Walk in the Woods’ (paperback)

A Walk in the WoodsHappy Friday everyone! I’ve talked a few times on the blog about how Bill Bryson is one of my favorite authors–hilarious, informative, and more than a little snarky. His books blend travel writing, science and history with wit and humor that leaves me doubled over laughing!

A Walk in the Woods is the story of his attempt to hike the Appalachian trail, and this week the movie version is hitting theaters, so I thought it was the perfect time to do a book giveaway! Once you’ve had a chance to see the movie, you can read the book and see how they compare.

Entry is simple; just use the Rafflecopter widget below. The giveaway is open internationally through September 13; everyone can earn a freebie entry, but you can also earn additional entries by leaving a comment or following on my social media channels (I especially recommend following on Bloglovin’, so you don’t miss out on future posts and giveaways!). Good luck!

Book review: ‘Specters in a City of Ruin’, by Nathan Ritter (plus a giveaway!)

Specters in a City of Ruin

Specters in a City of Ruin (The Mind Trips of SCAM #2), by Nathan Ritter (66 pages, Kindle). Buy it here on Amazon. (Snag it for free until February 1st!)

A couple of weeks ago I gave you guys a review (and an author interview!) of Heroes in a World Reborn, the first in a new series of kids’ books, with a fun twist: the books are meant to be read while listening to classic music albums.  Now the sequel, Specters in a City of Ruin, is available on Amazon–and for a few short days, you can download it for free (so hurry!).

This book is meant to be read to Marvin Gaye’s 1971 album What’s Going On (which you can find here on YouTube). Just a day has passed since Max and Rob went on their first music-fueled adventure and founded S.C.A.M. (the Secret Club of Ancient Music), but they’re eager to go back to Uncle Lou’s and have another adventure.

However, things aren’t going so smoothly for the boys today. For starters, they can’t stop arguing about the rules for their new club. And when they choose a record from Uncle Lou’s stash, instead of a vibrant fantasy world, they find themselves transported to a dead city filled with phantoms and skeletons. What’s happening, and how will they get home?

If you have eight-to-twelve-year-old kids who enjoy fantasy adventures and music, they’ll love this series. The book ends on a bit of a cliffhanger that nicely sets up the third book in the series.

And for those of you who haven’t read the first book in the series, I’m giving away a Kindle copy this week! Just use the Rafflecopter widget below to enter, and don’t forget to download your free copy of book two before Sunday!

—–

I have only one word to describe this novel: mesmerizing. I would have read it in one sitting if I hadn’t needed to stop for Thanksgiving dinner preparations; once you pick it up it’s very hard to put down, so make sure you’ve blocked out a few hours of free time before you get started.

The novel opens at a crowded theater in Waterloo, Iowa, in 1905. The Amazing Arden is the most famous female illusionist of the early twentieth century, a novelty in a time when women are relegated to the assistant’s role in a magic act. She’s most notorious for The Halved Man, an illusion in which she appears to saw a man in half on stage. Feisty and seductive, she decides to put a last-minute spin on her most famous act by swapping her saw for a fire ax–but when her husband’s body is later found under the stage, it seems that Arden was using the act to disguise an all-too-real murder.

Or was she? Young policeman Virgil Holt saw everything from the audience, so when he encounters the fleeing magician, he immediately takes her into custody, certain of her guilt. But Arden protests her innocence, and as she begins to weave the tale of her life, he realizes that as with her stage act, not everything is as it seems. Arden has a dark and spellbinding story to tell, and as the night unfolds, Virgil becomes less and less certain of the truth. It will take everything he has to decide if her story is true, or just another elaborately crafted illusion.

A lot of glitz and glamour goes into Arden’s stage act, but her life’s story is anything but enchanting. It’s a dark, gritty, and often painful journey from her childhood as Ada Bates to her reinvention as The Amazing Arden. It was difficult to guess how events would play out, and even once I thought I knew what would come next, I ended up getting a surprise in the next pages. Arden is an enchanting storyteller, leading you through the highs and lows of your life so that you’re dying to know what comes next, and holding your breath that her luck will take a turn for the better.

There was one teeny thing that bugged me about the ending of the book, but it’s very spoilerish, so I’m not going to put it in this post–but you can click over to my Goodreads review to see the blacked-out spoiler!

And now for the fun part: Sourcebooks is generously giving away a copy of The Magician’s Lie to one lucky reader! All you have to do to enter is use the Rafflecopter widget below. The giveaway is open to U.S. residents only and will close on December 13th. Good luck!

Review + GIVEAWAY: Hurraw! lip balm

Hurraw lip balm

Today I have a review and a giveaway for you! I’m going to tell you about my favorite lip balms and then give you a chance to win a few of your own. You can enter using the Rafflecopter widget at the end of the post!

The product: Hurraw! vegan lip balms, $3.79-$4.29; available in 22 flavors at hurrawbalm.com or in select natural foods stores.

The claim: Smooth, not too sweet or sticky, free of animal ingredients or harsh chemical additives, and won’t melt in your pocket. It’s (take a deep breath) raw, organic, vegan, and fair trade, and it’s free of gluten, soy, shea, petroleum, parabens, preservatives, artificial flavors and colors, and GMOs. Whew!

Core ingredients: Almond oil, coconut oil, cacao butter, jojoba oil, olive oil, castor oil, sesame oil, and candelilla wax; flavors and colors are naturally extracted or distilled.

I tried it: I’ve gone through several tubes of this lip balm and somehow never got around to writing up a review. As you can see from the above picture, my current faves are chocolate, grapefruit, mint and chai, all of which taste exactly as you’d expect. The formula is super-smooth and not too slippery or tacky. I slather it on all day long and even use it under lipstick to keep my lips comfortable. I feel like the formula is far superior to some other lip balms I’ve tried that turn gritty or slick halfway through the tube.

The balms have a faint scent and taste pertaining to their flavor, but it’s nothing artificial or overpowering. I love knowing that I’m not putting nasty chemicals on my lips when I use this lip balm. The lip balm comes in a flattened oval tube with bright, cute, simple packaging. I like that these tubes fit well in pockets and also that the product doesn’t melt in the heat or turn hard when it’s cold out.

There is an SPF lip balm (made with zinc) for the summer months if you want sun protection for your lips, but I love the flavored non-SPF tubes the rest of the time, especially in the winter. They really make my lips feel great and I love that I can layer them under other lip products without my mouth turning into a slippery mess. (Chronic chapped lip sufferers know: if you can’t layer it with a lip balm, you’re not wearing it during the winter months! Great lip balm is a must for wearing bold lipsticks and lip glosses when the weather turns dry and cold.)

Speaking of the winter months–I like that this balm is really gentle. When my lips are dry and sore (or heaven forbid, cracked), the last thing I want is a balm that’s going to irritate them further. This stuff moisturizes without stinging, no matter how thickly or how often you apply it.

My final rating: 10/10. I could not be happier with this balm. It feels great on my lips and comes in so many yummy flavors that I can keep a different one in my purse, my car, my desk, my nightstand, etc. and sample several at any given time! I also love the company’s commitment to natural and green business practices (read more on that here). I love the price. I love the cute packaging. In short, I love everything!

And now on to the giveaway!

Visit the Hurraw! website and choose your own trio of flavors, then use the Rafflecopter widget below to enter the giveaway. It’s open worldwide through the 20th. Good luck!
