Nail Polish of the Month: September 2012

September is National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, and the color of the campaign is teal, so I decided to go with a bright teal polish for my monthly pick. The color: Wet N Wild Fergie Nail Color in Miami Spirit ($4).

This polish has a finish that’s not quite matte, but not quite glossy; if it were wall paint, I think it’d be “eggshell”. I added a glossy topcoat to it for more shine, but it’s pretty either way!

How to nail the shorts and boots trend

Some clothes seem meant strictly for one season: bikinis, sweaters, so on and so forth. But autumn is that rare magical season when you can take pieces from summer–like shorts–and pieces from your new fall/winter wardrobe–like boots–and blend them together for a totally trendy, hip, rock-chic look. Here’s how to nail the look:

1. Stick with short boots. Ankle boots, low cowgirl boots, short moto boots, even wedge booties–all work great with this trend. Avoid knee-high (or, gasp, thigh-high) versions unless you want to be mistaken for an extra on the set of a Pretty Woman remake.

2. Stick to regular, thigh-length shorts. Hot pants are for Hollywood celebs only, and bermudas are too long and look awkward.

3. Pull it all together. Go a little bit rock-n-roll with a vintage-y tee, moto boots, and aviators. Wear ankle booties with dressy shorts, a silky tank, and some cool jewelry. The point is, own the look: don’t let people mistakenly assume you just couldn’t find your flip-flops at the last minute.

The important thing you really need to do with your facial products

Think you know exactly how to apply your favorite face care products? Think again: there’s something very important you need to do that you’re probably not doing…

…and that would be: using them on your neck and chest, too.

Why? Well, unless you’re wearing turtlenecks 24/7 (um, nope), the skin on your neck and chest receives just as much damage from sun, wind, and pollution as your face–and while it isn’t quite as delicate as the skin on your face, it is thinner and more damage-prone than the skin on the rest of your body.

In other words, if you’re diligent about your face, but neglect your neck and decolletage, you’ll wind up with a youthful face and a dead giveaway of wrinkles and sunspots right below it.

So, next time you’re applying a facial masque, slathering on sunscreen, or applying your nightly antioxidant cream, remember to continue on down past the jawline and apply to your neck and chest, too. You’ll thank yourself later!
