Ten on Tuesday

Ten on Tuesday: new job, new snacks and new books

1. Yesterday’s scheduled post accidentally went up a day early (on Sunday), so I guess I missed a day in the Blog Every Day in November challenge. But so far I’ve had something original to post each day instead of using the calendar prompts, so I guess that’s a good thing, right?

2. I finally got a hold of this book. The fact that it features a gun-toting panda is enough to make me want to read it, but I also have a slight preoccupation with grammar (I can’t listen to Clapton’s “Lay Down Sally” without clenching my teeth and hissing “Lie! Lie!”) so this should be an entertaining read.

3. The first week on the new job went pretty splendidly, if I do say so myself.

4. Terrible confession time: Part of the training for this new spot involves learning to run the wickedly temperamental electric jack in the receiving bay. It’s about as sturdy as a shopping cart with a bad wheel and has an engine that will knock you off your feet if you aren’t careful, so of course the whole first night involved plenty of sweating on my part and plenty of cries of “Look out! Newbie on the jack!” from anyone passing through, since it’s pretty much a given you’ll smash something and/or cause bodily harm to someone who gets in the way when you first learn to run this thing.

So anyway, shortly after I came back from lunch–and after, I might add, a successfully spill-free night–I got a panicked call on the radio from my fellow manager/trainer to find a mop and come to receiving immediately. As it turns out, after all of his warnings about making a mess, he smashed a pallet of juice and turned the receiving dock into a mango-scented hazard. I won’t lie and say I didn’t find this slightly, selfishly hilarious.

5. We had our first snowfall today!

6. I’m not loving Daylight Savings Time. Not only is it hella weird when you work overnights, since the time clock rolls back automatically and messes up all the lunch punches, and no can figure out if they’re supposed to be on or off the clock…but now my limited exposure to daylight feels even more brief. I just want to hibernate now.

7. My friend Katrin pointed me over to the blog My Subscription Addiction, which is devoted entirely to subscription boxes of every kind, and now I’ve been having fun looking at all the different types of subbie boxes you can get. Who knew there were so many? Recently there was a post featuring an invite code for the Graze snack boxes (see that post here), so of course since the first box was free I thought I’d give it a whirl. And then when I got to the site and started my sign-up process, I realized that they actually have a way to customize your subscription to fit a nut allergy, a gluten-free diet, or a vegan diet! Genius! The inclusion of non-vegan items has always been a major factor in steering me away from snack boxes, so I’m really curious to see whether my first box will indeed be vegan-friendly or not. (If you’re a vegan, you know how that goes.)

8. This is a sure sign of how book-obsessed and people-avoiding I’ve become: I figured out how to access the local library’s card catalog from the internet, so now I can log in from home, browse and place holds on books, and get an e-mail alert when they’re ready for pick-up. No more wandering through the library trying to remember what I’m looking for; I can do it all in my pajamas. When you use so much of something that you have to streamline the process by which you obtain it, it’s probably a bona fide addiction!

9. My kitty also loves books, apparently: she’s taken to hiding in the bookshelf and then exploding out in a shower of books when I walk by. It’s a good thing the shelves are full of lightweight paperbacks!

10. This has been a very wordy Ten on Tuesday. I guess I’m just in a rambling mood today! :P

That book sounds pretty awesome. I will have to check it out! I love to get book recommendations as you know. :)
#4 definitely is hilarious! :) Glad everything is going so well at work!
You really had snow already? Wow!
Glad you like that website! I love browsing through all the different boxes too! I would love to try the Vegan Cuts Snack Box! I mean, a box full of vegan treats sounds awesome to me. It is so hard to find vegan snacks!
Love #8! Browsing through books while wearing my pyjamas sounds awesome to me!
#9:I love your kitty! That sounds fantastic and funny and cute!

The snow didn’t stick, sadly (or not!). But it makes me want to get out my Christmas decorations already!!

It is SO hard finding vegan snacks! That reminds me, I was going to ask if you’ve read any cookbooks by Isa Chandra Moskowitz? I thought maybe I’ve seen her cookbooks mentioned on your blog! I just picked up “Vegan With a Vengeance” from the library and it has sooo many yummy recipes in it. I’m drooling over the desserts section!

Hello!!!! I popped by via BEDN!!!! Lovely to meet you!!! This list is so interesting! Glad the new job is going well!! I confess, I was slightly amused on your behalf that someone else spilled the juice instead of you!!! Pride comes before a fall/spillage perhaps!?!
I also love reading!!! Nice to meet another book lover!x

Wow snow already? I feel like work is taking over my life, especially since I have to fill in for my boss who is still on medical leave. I haven’t got a chance to enjoy the autumn weather and I fear it might be passing too soon. Sounds like you had a wonderful first day. I hope they didn’t make you mop.

Yay glad your new job is going well and you’ve survived your first day of driving an electric jack. That sounds scary lol. :) I like Daylight Saving Time, I just wish it was year round. I don’t like Standard time (what we are on now). Who in their right mind wants it to be dark by 4pm? That’s just loony.

It is! When we left a movie last night at 4:30 it was already so dark, it felt like it was time to go home and crawl into bed, not get supper :P The days it’s raining are even worse.

First off congrats on a successful week one and cheers to many more! I have had Eat, Shoots & Leaves for probably 6 years and I need to actuslly read it – I’m positive I’m using punctuation all sorts of wrong! You just found the e-catalog…oh child! If I didn’t use it I would go nuts, I also use my boyfriends library card so I can place double the holds! Chicago only allows 3 holds at a time… Argh. My kitty has taken to poking in me the face at night with a paw til’ I wake up!

    4. Running a jack sounds TERRIFYING!
    5. Whaaat?? This Alabamian can’t even imagine.
    8. HA! That’s awesome!
    9. That paints such a funny picture!

    Thanks for linking up!

It’s okay once you get used to it. I forget you’re down south–I guess it would be weird to have snow at this time of the year! It does set the mood for an early Christmas, though :)
